Pompey Women Visit Ashton Gate - Bristol City (A)

Pompey Women conceded an early goal at Ashton Gate to be beaten 1-0 by Bristol City.

Over 40+ Blues made the trip to Bristol this Sunday (20th Oct 2024) to back the women's team on the road.

It was a very very Wet and Rainy trip over to Ashton Gate and with diversions in place due to a planned closure between Junction 18 and 19 on the M4 it made for a long eventful journey down to South West side. The Stadium was alright to find despite being in the middle of Bristol city centre.

I don't think Ashton Gate offered any onsite parking really to fans meaning we had to seek other parking alternatives. Street Parking for most of the surrounding area was under Local Restrictions including the neighbouring retail parks that had 90 min customers only limits. So with over 4,800 fans total attendance at the game it definitely made Parking a tad hard to come by. The Club (Portsmouth) Cancelled Coach travel to the ground earlier in the week due to not enough fans booking on to use it.

Walking the streets around the stadium it was amazing to see what the Bristol City Team meant to the local community. You could see hundreds of old Stickers everywhere you looked and could even see multiple Men's team Player Murals which had been painted on the sides of buildings.

After entering through the rather fancy turnstiles into the stadium you entered a huge concourse area which had food and drink options available to purchase before heading up one of the many small stairwells which took you up into the stand. It was cool to see a Sweet stand set up in here for the kids (Or Adults..)!

The traveling Pompey Fans were located in the South West corner of the Stadium in the section labelled W17. We had a great clear view over the pitch however it was surprising how far away from the action you were if you wanted to sit right up in the back of the section in the stand!

Club Mascots 'Red' and 'Robyn' were wandering around the stadium before, at half time and at full time for fans to say hello to and get pictures with. We did catch 'Red' having a little boogie on the pitch at half time to one of the songs that was being played.

Half time they had a live show which was being streamed up on the big screens in the stadium. The host was interacting with fans and interviewed a Player for fans to watch/ Listen to. There was a bit of a random 'on pitch' segment where the organiser picked two fans from the crowd out to compete against each other race rolling giant inflatable apples across the pitch and back to win some sort of prize.

There was a good Pompey turnout of fans getting behind the girls which it would be nice to think definitely played a factor in how tight the game got in stages.

Full Time, after the players were finished in their group huddle they walked over and applauded the Traveling fans at full time.

When I was leaving the stadium there was some confusion even within the Bristol City supporters on how to get out of the stand... After walking back down the steps into the concourse all the shutters were pulled down where fans got in. Turns out to get out you use one of the one-way access doors that look like emergency exits next to each of the turnstiles. Whether this was the right way to get out who knows but was the only obvious way we could see at the time!
